Career Background

More Than Five Decades of Leadership Experience

My career developed through roles as a teacher, principal, senior administrator, and superintendent. For more than two decades, I served as a superintendent, with my final role at the Dover School District in Dover, New Hampshire, where I served from 2016 until my retirement on June 30, 2025.

Leading a complex public institution required difficult decisions, productive board relationships, leadership development, clear communication, and strong accountability. Those experiences shape how I coach today.

Leadership problems are rarely as simple as they first appear. A personnel issue may really be an accountability problem. Team conflict may reflect unclear roles. A stalled initiative may come from uncertainty about ownership. My role is to help leaders look beyond the visible symptom and identify what truly needs attention.

My credentials include a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), an Education Specialist degree, a Master of Education, and a Bachelor of Science.

A New Chapter

From Superintendent to Executive Coach in Dover, NH

Retiring from one executive role gave me the opportunity to use decades of experience differently. I founded WRH Coaching & Consulting to support leaders who carry significant responsibility but need an experienced perspective outside their normal reporting structure.

Some leaders come to me while navigating a difficult decision. Others want to strengthen delegation, improve leadership-team alignment, work more effectively with a board, or prepare for a larger role. Others are leading through change, succession, strategic planning, growth, or accountability challenges.

"The situations differ, but the question is often the same: What is actually preventing this leader or organization from moving forward?"

Finding the answer requires an honest look at assumptions, responsibilities, relationships, systems, and delayed decisions.

Let's Talk

Let's Talk About the Leadership Decision in Front of You

You do not need to arrive with a perfectly defined coaching objective. Your leadership team may be struggling, a strategic initiative may have stalled, you may be entering a new role, or you may be dealing with governance, accountability, organizational change, or delegation. That is enough to begin.

Coaching Approach

Why Work With William R. Harbron?

My approach to executive coaching is practical, confidential, candid, and action-oriented. I have spent decades working with boards, managing leadership teams, navigating public expectations, leading organizational change, and remaining accountable for results.

Practical Experience

That experience helps conversations move quickly from theory to practical reality. I believe a coach should do more than validate what a leader already thinks. Strong coaching creates enough trust for assumptions to be challenged respectfully.

Confidential Space

Senior leaders also need confidentiality—a place to discuss difficult questions openly. Most importantly, coaching should lead somewhere. A productive conversation should create greater clarity about decisions, ownership, priorities, or next steps.
